Run | Number 90

After Tuesdays impromptu long run I was still knackered, obviously just in time for an efforts session. This time it took place at the rowing lake, after a 'gentle' jog down, gentle to most but pretty much my 5k pace for me we were ready. The rowing lake is a 1km stretch so we did as follows.

500 m - 5k pace
2 mins recovery
500 m - 5k pace
2 mins recovery
1km - 5k pace
3 mins recovery
500 m - 5k pace
2 mins recovery
1km - 5k pace

Gentle jog/walk back up to Bushfield.

As always I set off to fast with this as I didn't want to be trailing behind and I really regretted it as I was knackered before we had even gotten half way through. Hopefully this will make me faster though.

Run | Number 89

Distance: 7.78 miles
Time: 1:28:40
Average Pace: 11:31

This is just not a necessary distance for a Tuesday night when I haven't eaten properly through the day, but you know what I put my mind to it and I made it through. Although this run hurt I really enjoyed it as it has made me realise that even when I don't want to do something I can.

Run | Number 88 | Barney Memorial 5k

On Wednesday there was another 5k race, and we all know what that means, it means I always want to take part. Who would of thought that I would of given up my Wednesday evenings to run a race. Crazy. I knew Paula wanted to take this run easy so I knew I would be on my own in this one, I had no game plan and just decided to run how I felt. I knew I had set out quite fast and I really hoped I wouldn't blow up half way round. I kept to my pace and kept with the others around me, even overtaking a few. Towards the last km I was knackered but I knew I was nearly there so dug deep, this was held at the same place as the parkrun's but the finish line was slightly further down the path so I tried to not push to early. As we came up to the finish line I could feel a guy right behind me on my shoulder, I could feel him pushing to get past me so I sprinted in to the finish, I was not going to let him beat me.

I hadn't timed this race as I had no signal but I knew it had been fairly quick. When I saw the results I was gobsmacked. 5 little seconds away from under 30 minutes. This in insane, this is my goal for the end of the year and I'm so close to being there. I am so bloody proud of myself.

Miles: 6.1

This was a really good run, we set out as 5 of us but knew we were all slightly different speeds. I stayed at the front with George & Paula, as George had just completed the 3 peeks challenge he was taking it steady. I kept running at what is now my comfortable pace and kept looping back. About half way round I realised I could probably push it a little harder so I went off ahead. I even managed negative splits, with my last 3 miles all being around 10:30ish.

Run | Number 86

In half marathon training Sunday always becomes long run day. A few of us had organized to set off from Bushfield at 8am. This time last year I would of sworn at you if you had made me get out of bed at 7am on a Sunday morning, but now I understand that needs must. Instead of doing our normal 9 mile Haddon route, we opted for something different as everyone is starting to get a little bored of it. We ran up to the water meadows behind Alwalton, across into Castor, down the old A47 into the woods, cross into Thrope Wood, Bluebell Wood, Orton Mere, Longueville woods and back to Bushfield. I really enjoyed this route and I think it really helps when you don't know where you're going therefore you have no concept of how long you've been running for or how long you have left.

After quite a grueling week my legs were feeling pretty tired but I need to get used to running on this feeling as I might feel like this on race day. I set off way to fast as I always do when I run with others, but Sarah reined me in and made me slow down. I felt really slow the whole way round, it didn't hurt or feel particularly harder than usual but I just never really found my rhythm. Pretty funny really as it ended up being my fastest long distance run to date.

We did 8.81 miles in 1 hour 39 minutes.

Mile 1 - 11:04
Mile 2 - 10:57
Mile 3 - 11:58
Mile 4: 11:48
Mile 5 - 11:44
Mile 6 - 11:14
Mile 7 - 11:48
Mile 8 - 11:31
Mile 9 - 11:14

It's great to see my pace not only improving but staying around the same mark, when I first started this was always up and down. Lets hope by the half marathon I can keep this pace up.

Cycle | Trying something new

As you may or may not know I finally bought a road bike and I'm totally loving it. I've never enjoyed cycling before, if I'm honest I've always found it really dull and boring. Oh how that has changed since I bought my beloved road bike. I just find it so easy, no longer do my legs hurt, my chest doesn't burn, I'm speeding along nearly as fast as the cars, it's amazing. On Saturday I went out with my dad and we rode just shy of 18 miles in 1 hour 20 minutes, amazing. Also major perk of cycling over running, you can stop for food and drink on route.

Also may be a little out of my depth but I have entered the ballot for the RideLondon 100 mile ride next year. Oooops.

I've also finally invested in a foam roller and oh my the pain is unbelievable, I've only used it 3 times and I can't believe how much of a difference it has made to my legs. This weekend I have ran a PB in a parkrun, cycled 18 miles & ran 9 and my legs still feel fresh. Amazing.

Your time was 31:33.

Wooohooo I finally PB'ed and by an impressive 96 seconds, even if I do say so myself. 39th female and 4th in my age group!

Run | Number 84

This week has been a really good running week.

George took me out again on Thursday and we set out to do a 6 mile route. We were practicing my pacing for the half marathon. For the first half sticking to a slower and more comfortable pace and if I can up the pace for the last half.

Splits come in at:
Mile 1: 11:42
Mile 2: 11:19
Mile 3: 11:44
Mile 4: 11:41
Mile 5: 11:04
Mile 6: 11:04
Mile .6: 9:40

I really enjoyed this run, it felt really good to push myself harder than I normally do and it felt really good to be able to keep up the pace on the second half, possibly first time I have ever had negative splits. I think I'm finally getting the hang of this.

Time: I don't know but fast for me!!!

On Tuesday I set out to do 5k with George and Ally. One of the guys from Bushfield had completed an Ironman on Sunday (absolute inspiration) so Sean decided he would plod along with us just to get his legs moving. The pace was actually fairly slow for me but I was enjoying listening to his stories from Sunday. All of a sudden I just thought if Sean can do this I can push myself and run a little bit faster. So off I went, and it felt good, it felt fast. About half way round I was begining to struggle but I knew I couldn't let them catch back up with me. A woman moved to the side to let me through, obviously I thanked her and she said "I wish I could do what you're doing" and that was the boost I needed to bring it home.

Unfortunately I didn't record my time but the others came in in 34 minutes so I'm fairly certain it would of been the fastest 5k I've ever done.

My little legs are speeding up!

Run | Number 82

On Sunday I headed out with the guys from Bushfield to run to favorite route, Haddon. I'm sure you've read about this route before but it boast's a big hill at around the mile 6 mark.

I ran with George and as you can see from the splits we ran at a really comfortable pace, I can see I'm getting quicker though and able to keep my faster pace up for prolonged periods of time. I was really chuffed with myself as not only did it feel comfortable and enjoyable but I tackled the hill for the first time and made it to the top without stopping.

Total time: 1:49 minutes. (the first time I did this it took me 1:59)

Splits

Mile 1 - 11:39
Mile 2 - 12:11
Mile 3 - 11:49
Mile 4 - 11:48
Mile 5 -12:04
Mile 6 - 12:34
Mile 7 - 12:11
Mile 8 - 12:20
Mile 9 - 12:07
Mile .5 - 10:52

Run | Number 81 | Parkrun

On Saturday I took part in the first Peterborough parkrun. Held at Ferry Meadows every Saturday at 9pm (starts at the visitors center), it's a great event for both elites and first time runners. It's completely free of charge to enter, all you do is register on the website, print off your allocated bar-code (laminate it if you wish), turn up on the start line with your bar-code, run 5k, when you cross the finish line you collect another tag, take both tag and bar code to a member of staff to scan in your time, then wait with fingers crossed that you got a Pb.

Saturday rolled around and I wasn't really sure how much I had in me, in previous post's I've been saying how unwell my lack of medication has been making me, but I turned up and decided to give it my all. Sarah was very lovely and offered to pace me round in the hope of beating my Pb. Unfortunately this didn't happen and I was 20 seconds out. Why do I always slow down on the last km!! I also may of thrown up on the finish line, but my sickness went away for a few days after that.

Time: 33.09
Place: 170th (60th female) out of 210 runners
Category: 6th in age group (F20-24) not a lot of young females ran that day!

The morning was really well organised, ran on time with really helpful marshals. I'll definitely be back this week. A Pb is firmly in my sights.

Health | Crohn's disease | Update 1

It's been a little while since I made my first post about being diagnosed with Crohn's disease back in April, seeing as I've now had my 3 month check up (albeit 1 month late) I thought I would let you know how I've been getting on. When first diagnosed I was put on Budesonide a steroid to bring down the inflammation in my bowel, this worked instantly but for the first 2 weeks did give me some pretty epic stomach cramps (nothing I can't handle), once this died down I felt the best I had in years, I was full of energy, my apatite was increasing and I was all of a sudden enjoying my food more. This did come with a few side effects, unfortunately my hair started thinning and I was going for a wee more than 4 times a night, but other then that I got on really well with this medication.

I was meant to be seen early July to discuss what was going to happen next, I was also meant to have an MRI scan and at the moment that still hasn't been organized. I had to wait until the 2nd August for my appointment and I dramatically went down hill in that time. For 3 weeks I was completely off food which is totally unlike me, I was eating for the sake of it and I permanently felt nauseous, not very fun. I've found it really hard to come to terms with the fact that I need to slow down and rest as my body can't function without it. On Friday I had a complete breakdown on my mother and ended up spending all day in bed.

At my appointment on Friday I met with a great doctor and he really took the time out to explain everything. I am still going to be booked in for an MRI scan, I have been put back on a 3 month plan of budesonide and I have also started taking Azathioprine. This medication has a terrible list of side effects and doesn't have very good reviews online, but I'm willing to give it a go if it will make me better.

Side effects include:
- fever, night sweats, weight loss, tiredness;
- feeling full after eating only a small amount
- pain in your upper stomach that may spread to your shoulder;
- easy bruising or bleeding, pale skin, feeling light-headed or short of breath, rapid heart rate; or nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).
- severe nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.

I have been taking this now for 3 days and although at the moment I do feel a little better I am however covered in bruises (I don't bruise easily), in 2 weeks of not taking any medication I lost 9lbs from not eating properly, I still don't have my apatite back and I constantly feel nausea. My doctor told me this will stay for at least 6 weeks until my new medication kicks in.

It's all fun and games over here.

Run | Number 80 | 5k Grand Prix Series | Werrington

Last night we were struck with the difficult decision between running the last 5k in the series, or competing in the last triathlon of the season. Sarah's bike had been in for repair and unfortunately wasn't ready yesterday so 5k it was. I've heard good things about this race and it's described as a flat and fast course, I was looking forward to hopefully smashing my PB (unfortunately this did not happen).

The course was lovely and as promised flat but unfortunately not fast for me. There was too many turns and I felt like I was loosing speed having to keep navigating the corners. I asked Paula to pace me again but she was going for 29 minutes (no way in hell I could do this) I decided to stick with her as long as I could and drop back when I needed too. 5 minutes in she started walking, saying the heat was too much and she felt lightheaded, I managed to get her to carry on but slowly, as time doesn't really matter. We carried on with me just in front of her for most of the way. At around the 4k mark I burnt out and then relied on Paula to get me round. We crossed the finish line together holding hands pleased that neither of us had given up.

I'm pretty sure my official time was 32 minutes 53 seconds. 8 seconds off my PB, but I will be back. Peterborough is finally starting parkrun this weekend so I can now run all the 5k's (or maybe not).

Run | Number 79

Distance: 5.4 miles

Time: 1:06:17

Average Pace: 12:21

Splits
Mile 1: 11:15
Mile 2: 12:43
Mile 3: 12:20
Mile 4: 12:20
Mile 5: 13:08
Mile 6: 11:47

A really enjoyable run with Sarah, George & Ally. As I've said before I love running with George as he always manages to keep me going, I have never once stopped to walk when I am running with him. It was nice to run with Sarah, as I haven't ran with her in ages, she is a little quicker than I am, but not too fast that I have no chance of catching up with her so I might try and run with her more often.

We did a new route (well new for me) round Alwalton and across the water meadows before coming back into ferry meadows, a really nice route on a sunny evening (maybe a little too sunny).
